WALNUT GROVE – The shores of Lake Laura in Walnut Grove were lined with enthusiastic young anglers last Saturday for the annual Walnut Grove Loggers Fishing Tournament for kids 12 and under.

This year’s derby, held in scenic Plum Creek Park, marked the event’s 29th year, thanks to the work of the Walnut Grove Loggers. The Walnut Grove Loggers is a licensed non-profit organization that is used to raise funds for the community. Funds are generated through drawbars, bingo and raffles.

Shanaya Albertson of the Walnut Grove Loggers said this year’s event was a huge success with 29 children entering the derby.

“It’s going really well. There are 29 kids so far, so I would say that’s a pretty good turnout ”, said Albertson. “There were a lot of kids who were really excited when they got here.”

Adding further excitement to the derby, some nice prizes were offered to the winners at the end of the day.

“We split them into two (groups), then there is a price for the younger (group) and a price for the older one. They will have fishing rods, then everyone here will have a small tackle box for participation and a shirt ”, said Albertson.
